Freewriting Is One Of The Best Ways To Incorporate SEL Lesson Planning

While freewriting may be one of the oldest tricks in the book, there are plenty of reasons why it is still so effective.

Students Work Through a Language Arts Exercise

Many teachers want to pair up as many subjects as possible to make the most of their time as well as their student's energy. When you choose freewriting as an SEL lesson, you also encourage students to use their language skills. They use proper punctuation and grammar, and this helps them work through using proper language skills while also expressing themselves.

Students Identify Their Feelings

One of the most difficult components of SEL is encouraging students to understand their own feelings. It is through the identification of their own feelings that students are often able to build a sense of self. They also become better at regulating their emotions.

Students Talk Through Problems

Writing out one's problems is also beneficial for students who need help work through problems. Freewriting provides an opportunity to discuss a problem and potentially arrive at a solution. Writing through the steps can at least provide some stress relief.

Students Can Build Empathy

In some lesson plans, students may discuss people they know or people they care about. You may ask students to write about times they helped others or times others helped them. You might even ask your students to write about situations in which somebody might take a specific action. This helps students establish empathy and concern for others.

Students Evaluate Their Own Decisions

Students often benefit from reflecting on their own decisions. When your students write about decisions they have made in the past, they evaluate and reflect on what kind of decision they would make again in the future. They learn more about effective decision-making.

Students Build a Love for Writing

Writing can be extremely cathartic, and often students benefit from learning this. Students encouraged to write their feelings in class may be more inclined to write down their feelings at home too.
